The Principal Charity Classic presented by Wells Fargo was recently presented the 2011 Iowa Tourism Award for Outstanding Event/Festival. “The 2011 Principal Charity Classic was a tremendous success, attracting a record crowd of 75,000. On behalf of our fans, volunteers, sponsoring businesses and community partners, we’re proud and honored to receive this award from the Iowa Tourism office,” said Jamie Alt, tournament director of The Principal Charity Classic. A Record $750,000 to Charity!

The 2011 Principal Charity Classic has donated a record $750,000 to local children’s charities, tournament officials announced at a recent event at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines. “The 2011 Principal Charity Classic was a tremendous success, attracting a record crowd of 75,000. With the help of our 1,200 volunteers, sponsoring businesses and community partners, we’re proud of another great year,” said Larry Zimpleman, chairman, president and CEO of The Principal®. “This tournament provides families, golf fans and young professionals the chance to experience all Des Moines has to offer. WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Bob Gilder made a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 18, then watched Mark Brooks bogey the hole to escape with a one-stroke victory Sunday in the Principal Charity Classic. "It's just been a long time," said Gilder, choking up in the emotion of the moment. "You put in a lot of work as you get older. You kind of wonder if you can do it again." Read full story.
