Ball Meets Bird - What are the odds? Actor Rob Lowe's slice means early exit for state bird

The first birdie captured during opening day of The Principal Charity Classic had feathers.  While teeing up during Wednesday’s pro-am event at Glen Oaks Country Club, actor Rob Lowe accidentally struck a small goldfinch in mid-flight.  Unfortunately, the beloved state bird was later laid to rest along the course.

“Everyone kept asking, ‘What are the odds?’ so I posed the question to the experts on our actuarial staff,” said Ellen Lamale, chief actuary for the Principal Financial Group®.  “It turns out there’s roughly a one in 240 million chance of this happening with all factors taken into consideration.  Even with the odds in his favor, it looks like our feathered friend was really just a sitting duck.”

“We told Rob participating our inaugural event would be a great feather in his cap, but we didn’t realize he’d take it so seriously,” said Barry Griswell, chairman and CEO of The Principal®.  “Despite his rocky start on the course, Rob played a great round.  He’s welcome back anytime.”

The Principal Charity Classic tournament play begins on Friday, June 8 and continues through Sunday, June 10.  The field features the Champions Tour’s top three career money leaders: Hale Irwin, Gil Morgan and Tom Kite.
