Mission: Level the playing field for immigrant and refugee children and families.

Genesis Youth Foundation is a nonprofit in Des Moines that works to level the playing field for immigrant and refugee youth. Their sole purpose is to provide a safe, nurturing environment for underserved youth while fostering community awareness of vulnerable children’s lived experiences.

Core programming for the organization includes after-school classes, recreational soccer, and the arts, including performing arts, cooking, and sewing activities. These programs seek to help children adjust to the challenges of living in a different linguistic, educational, and religious culture – challenges made even harder by many families’ limited income and lack of social support.

Sam and Tricia Gabriel, refugees from Liberia, founded Genesis Youth Foundation in 2014. The couple’s first-hand knowledge of the struggles that refugee children face here in our community drives them to continue to create better opportunities for current immigrant/refugee children in the Des Moines area.

Until recently, they drove two-hour routes, picking up children of mostly African immigrants from all around the metro enrolled in the program. The children gather for two hours of tutoring, soccer, and dance before Sam and his wife drive the students back home.

Principal Charity Classic Birdies For Charity matching funds proudly support the immigrant and refugee youth who participate in Genesis’ programming, including helping to cover the cost of their transportation, snacks, and soccer uniforms. Since 2019, Birdies For Charity has donated $15,000 to Genesis Youth Foundation.
