Mission: New Chapters is committed to making a wide variety of books available to at-risk youth by creating and maintaining libraries in the facilities where they reside. This commitment includes fostering a love of books and reinforcing reading skills in the youth served.
From shiny Kindles to crowded bookstores, the number of ways to access books is almost unlimited and probably something most take for granted. However, most children who live in a crisis shelter or receive mental health care at a treatment facility do not have the luxury of utilizing a school or public library. Luckily, Stacie Palmer, New Chapters Founder, developed a solution to this problem. New Chapters refurbishes and transforms spaces at treatment facilities into bright, welcoming libraries so resident youth can readily access books.
New Chapters has created and maintains libraries at Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS), Orchard Place Campus, Polk County Juvenile Detention Center and Youth Homes of Mid-America. Each year approximately 1,200 children utilize these libraries across the Des Moines metro. New books are added to the shelves on a regular basis in order to keep the libraries current and the children engaged. New Chapters will also fulfill special requests when a child asks for a specific book.
“In all the many years I have worked here, the libraries are by far the greatest gift we have been given.” – Orchard Place staff member
“Before I came here, I thought I hated to read. Now it’s my favorite thing to do. These books are what get me through the evenings and help me forget where I am.” – John, 17-year-old boy
The funds provided to New Chapters from the Principal Charity Classic Birdies For Charity program help the organization expand its collection of books so more children can experience the joy of reading.
