Volunteer FAQs


How many days do I have to volunteer and for how many hours?

We ask that you work a minimum of two (2) shifts over the course of the tournament, which range from four to six hours each.

What does the volunteer fee cover?

In exchange for your generous support of Iowa children’s charities, you receive the official volunteer uniform (one polo, one layering piece and a hat or visor), free admission for the entire tournament week, an invitation to the Volunteer Appreciation Party, preferred parking, five Good-Any-One-Day tickets to share with family and friends, and meals during the shifts you work.

Is there a minimum age limit to volunteer?

This year we have several junior volunteer opportunities for individuals 13–18 years old. Our junior package is $50 and includes a volunteer polo, a volunteer hat or visor, free admission for the week, meals on days of service, and five Good-Any-One-Day Tickets to share with friends and family. Juniors interested in volunteering should use the registration code junior.

If I am no longer able to volunteer, can I receive a refund?

Yes. You will be issued a refund if you cancel before May 15, 2017. Please call the tournament office at 515-279-4653 to request a refund.

If I purchased tickets and then became a volunteer can I refund my tickets?

No. Unfortunately, all ticket sales are final.

Can I watch golf when I am not working?

Yes. Your volunteer credential will serve as your admission pass for the entire week and we encourage you to use it. We do ask that you not wear your uniform when not on duty, so please bring a change of clothes if you plan to spectate before or after your shift.

Can I take photographs or ask for autographs?

When you are not working or in your volunteer uniform, you may use your camera during the pro-am days (Wednesday – Thursday). Cameras are not permitted on the grounds Friday – Sunday. You may ask for an autograph after the player’s round, but not while they are playing.

Where do I park when I volunteer?

Volunteers of Principal Charity Classic will park in a designated area at Southridge Mall. Dedicated (volunteer only) shuttles will transport volunteers to the volunteer only entrance conveniently located near Volunteer Headquarters and the driving range on the south side of the golf course. Volunteer shuttles will run on a continuous basis beginning at various times each day and ending approximately one hour after the final event of the day concludes. Approximate Shuttle hours:

Tuesday: 5:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 5:15 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Thursday: 5:15 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Sunday: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Where do I park when I am not working but want to attend?

Can I be scheduled (shift assignments) at the same time as my spouse, friend, etc.?

We will make every effort to accommodate your scheduling requests. Make sure to list your request in the “Work with or Committee Selection” portion of the registration process. Shift coordinating is only applicable within each committee (i.e. two people on different committees cannot be scheduled to work together at the same times).

What if I cannot attend the training session?

Please make every effort to attend training. However, if you are unable to attend, your committee chairman will provide you with the necessary information.

How do I know my assignment?

Committee assignments will begin April 10. We will send you a confirmation email with your committee assignment and chairman’s contact information prior to the tournament.

When will I hear from my Chairperson?

Shortly after you are given your assignment. Again, committee assignments will begin April 10.

How do I know my schedule? And when will I receive my schedule?

Chairpersons will begin scheduling the beginning of May, and will be in touch with you then.

What happens if it rains?

The event will go on, and we will need your help! Make sure to report to your committee’s check-in location 15-20 minutes prior to your shift, rain or shine. Any weather delays or cancellations will be on WHO-1040 or KXNO-1460.

When will I receive my uniform?

You will pick up your uniform at Uniform Distribution which will take place May 21 at the Wakonda Club. For those who live outside the Des Moines area, please let us know if you will be unable to attend and your volunteer package will be mailed to you; you will be asked to pay for postage.

What do I do if my uniform does not fit?

Please call Loralyn at the Tournament Office to set up a time to exchange. You may also visit the uniform table which is located in Volunteer Headquarters during Tournament Week. After uniform distribution we cannot guarantee that your needed size will be available.

Can I purchase extra uniform items?

Yes, you may purchase them at any time. After registration, uniform items will be available for exchange and purchase at the Tournament Office and at Volunteer Headquarters during the week of the event. Prices are as follows: Shirts: $35, Outerwear: $55 and Hats/Visors: $10.
