Birdies For Charity


Community spirit is the driving force on the links at the Principal Charity Classic, and central Iowans have a great opportunity to benefit area children’s programs by raising additional funds through the Birdies For Charity program.

Program overview

How does Birdies For Charity work? The 2017 Birdies For Charity program will provide a 10% match on ALL pledges made through the program. Matching funds will be distributed up to $100,000 in collected pledges, not to exceed $10,000 in matching funds. The Principal Charity Classic will redistribute funds to participating charities throughout the year. Payments will be made in February, May and August. Matching funds earned during the 2017 program will be paid in August 2017.

How to become a participating charity

The 2017 application process is now open. Applications for participation will be reviewed based on the following criteria:

Either: Must have 501(c)(3) status as recognized by the IRS and a portion of the organization’s programming must target children in the State of Iowa.

Or:  A K-12 school in the state of Iowa.

Responsibilities of participating charities

Participating organizations and their volunteers will solicit pledges of $.05 or more per birdie, or a flat donation from individuals or corporations. With the exception of postage for mailing collected pledge forms to Principal Charity Classic for administration, there is NO cost for taking part in the program

Responsibilities of Principal Charity Classic

Principal Charity Classic will not solicit pledges on behalf of any participating organization, but will provide:

  • Online donation administration
  • Pledge forms for participating organizations
  • Program administration, invoicing, processing and accounting

How you can donate

Every birdie made during the Principal Charity Classic means bucks for charity! Charities receive 100% of every donation collected on their behalf, plus an additional 10% in mathcing funds! All enrolled charities are eligible for a total of $10,000 in matching funds each year.

There are two ways to pledge:

Option 1: A per-birdie amount for every birdie made by the PGA TOUR Champions professionals during the three- day Principal Charity Classic. Minimum per-birdie: $.05

Option 2:  A one-time flat donation.

For example, a pledge of $.05 per birdie: $.05 x 821 birdies in 2017 = $41.05

The number of birdies can fluctuate due to unforeseeable conditions.

What is a birdie?

A “birdie” is a score of one stroke better than “par” for any golf hole on the course. “Par” is the normal expected score of a golf professional on any given hole. For example, on a par 4 hole, a score of 3 is a birdie.

Guess the Birdies Contest

To create additional excitement for the program, Principal Charity Classic will sponsor a “Guess the Birdies” contest. One lucky winner will win a grand prize. Participants who complete an official pledge form are eligible to guess the number of birdies that will be made by PGA TOUR Champions players Friday through Sunday of the Principal Charity Classic.

• Contest is open to all participants who are 18 years of age or older.
• One guess allowed per Birdies For Charity pledge.
• No more than 10 total entries per participant.
• Ties and alternate prizes are determined by a random drawing.
• Deadline for entries is Thursday, June 8, 2017.
• Void where prohibited by law. No pledge or donation necessary to participate.
